PURPOSE:To prepare a polyphenylene ether in a high catalytic yield under control of the formation of a by-product diphenoquinone, by oxidatively polymerizing phenols in the presence of a particular catalyst system. CONSTITUTION:Phenols (e.g., 2,6-dimethylphenol) are oxidatively polymerized at 0-100 deg.C for 1-4 hr in the presence of a catalyst system comprising 0.001-1mol, based on the phenols, bivalent Mn salts (e.g., MnCl2), an oxine derivative of the formula (wherein R<1-6> is H, 1-5C alkyl, 1-5C alkoxy, halogen, hydroxyl, nitro, amino) in an amount of 2 mol per mol of the Mn salts, an alkanolamine (e.g., ethanolamine) in an amount of 10-500mol per mol of the Mn salts, and 1-20 mol%, based on the phenols, alkaline compd. (e.g., NaOH).
