PURPOSE:To discriminate the shape of a check object pattern with a relatively simple method by dividing the check object pattern to express it with structural description parameters and comparing and collating each of them with structural description parameters of standard patterns. CONSTITUTION:Structural description parameters of plural kinds of circle and polygon as standard patterns are analyzed preliminarily and are stored in a prescribed memory. The check object pattern picture is binarized and is converted to run lengths, and a prescribed processing is performed in accordance with obtained data to extract outline points, and they are sampled to obtain individual turning points of the check object pattern, and the outline is divided at every turning point, and it is discriminated whether divided parts are a part of the circle or a part of the polygon, and they are expressed with the structural description parameters. Each of these structural description parameters is compared and collated with the standard patterns to discriminate the shape of the check object pattern overall.
