PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for drugs, etc., by a simple process inexpensively in high yield, by reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali sulfide with acrylonitrile, and decomposing the reaction product with an alkali. CONSTITUTION:As an aqueous solution of an alkali sulfide (e.g., sodium sulfide, potassium sulfide, etc.) or the alkali sulfide and a free alkali is stirred, acrylonitrile is gradually added to the solution, and reacted with it. The reaction solution is further heated, decomposed with an alkali, and acidified to give beta- mercaptopropionic acid by separation. In this method, since thiodipropionic acid as a reaction by-product is almost pure, it is purified simply and useful on the market as a raw material for lauryl ester, etc., and is advantageous.
