PURPOSE:To use efficiently the capacity of a semiconductor disk device, and also to execute its efficient operation by setting the logical capacity of a drive by a logical capacity setting means to match the magnitude of a variable capacity data written on each drive. CONSTITUTION:By a logical capacity setting means, for instance, a setting switch 12, which has been provided on every string module (SW) 5, plural logical drive capacities in the SM5 concerned are set in advance in accordance with a data set written on the SM5 concerned. Subsequently, this logical drive capacity data is inputted to a control table in a director (DIR) 4a for controlling write/readout of data on and to the SM5, and when writing plural data sets of variable length on the SM concerned, the DIR writes plural data sets of variable length in the logical drive capacity conforming with a variance in magnitude of the data set, and having the most suitable capacity, by an address based on a control table.
