PURPOSE:To purify and separate L-malic acid useful as a neutralizing agent for transfusion solution in high purity, by bringing a mixed solution of the L-malic acid and fumaric acid into contact with a nonpolar porous synthetic adsorbent. CONSTITUTION:A mixed solution of L-malic acid and fumaric acid is brought into contact with a styrene-divinylbenzene based nonpolar porous synthetic adsorbent, e.g. Diaion HP 10, to adsorb the mixed solution, and elution with water is carried out after the adsorption to utilize the adsorptivity difference between the malic acid and the fumaric acid contained in the solution, i.e. the malic acid is first eluted, and the fumaric acid is then eluted to give an L-malic acid solution containing no fumaric acid. There are batch and column methods as the contact method, but the column method is preferred. The chromatographic method is advantageous due to the large amount of liquid passage of the L-malic acid based on the adsorbent in the column method.
