NEW MATERIAL:A beta-(2,4-dinitrophenyloxy)acrylic ester shown by the formula I (R is alkyl, or aryl). EXAMPLE:beta-(2,4-Dinitrophenyloxy)acrylic acid methyl ester. USE:Useful as a herbicide. PREPARATION:A 2,4-dinitrobenzene shown by the formula II (X is halogen) is reacted with an alkali formylacetic ester shown by the formula III (M is alkali metal), to give a compound shown by the formula I. The reaction temperature is 0-80 deg.C. The solvent may or may not be used. When a reactive solvent is used, preferably both the concentrations of the compounds shown by the formula II and formula III in the reaction solution are preferably 1-20wt%. For example, dimethyl ether is preferable as the solvent.
