PURPOSE:To obtain porous glass having an arbitrary shape and a prescribed pore diameter when borosilicate glass is subjected to phase separation and treated with an acid to produce porous glass, by specifying the composition of the borosilicate glass. CONSTITUTION:Borosilicate glass consisting essentially of, by weight, 60-75% SiO2, 0-5% Al2O3, 18-30% B2O3, 2-7% Na2O and 2-5% NaF is subjected to phase separation by heat treatment to form an Na2O-B2O3 phase and an SiO2 phase. The Na2O-B2O3 phase is then leached out by immersing the glass in an acid such as sulfuric acid. By this method, porous glass having an arbitrary shape and a relatively large pore diameter of about 100-1,000Angstrom which is difficult to attain by a conventional method can be produced.
