PURPOSE:To prevent the deposition of a polymer scale to the wall of a polymerization reaction in the polymerization of a vinyl monomer, by coating the inner surface of the polymerization reactor with a compound obtained by the reaction of an oxystyrene polymer with a polyhydric phenolic compound and an aliphatic aldehyde. CONSTITUTION:(A) An oxystyrene polymer (preferably having a molecular weight of 1,000-40,000) is made to react with (B) a polyhydric phenolic com pound (preferably dihydric phenolic compound such as resorcinol, catechol, hydroquinone, etc. or trihydric phenolic compound such as pyrogallol, hydroxyhydroquinone, phloroglucinol, etc.) and (C) an aliphatic aldehyde (e.g. formaldehyde), and the reaction product is coated to the inner surface of a polymerization reactor. A vinyl monomer such as vinyl chloride is polymerized in an aqueous medium in the above reactor. The weight ratio of A/B is prefer ably 7/3-3/7, and the amount of the component C is preferably 0.1-1mol per 1mol of the component B.
