PURPOSE:To obtain a dispersive EL phosphor at low cost which is excellent in service life, luminance, etc., by adding an activator and a small amount of a barium compound to zinc oxide, heating the mixture in a carbon disulfide gas to convert the barium compound to a sulfide and calcining the sulfide in a hydrogen sulfide gas. CONSTITUTION:To zinc oxide or a composition comprising zinc oxide and zinc sulfide are added an activator (e.g. copper oxide or aluminum oxide) and a small amount (0.01-3mol%) of a barium compound (e.g. barium carbonate). The mixture is heated in a carbon disulfide gas to produce a sulfide. The sulfide is calcined in an atmosphere of a hydrogen sulfide gas to obtain an intended dispersive EL phosphor. The luminance and service life of the phosphor can be further improved by annealing the calcined sulfide in an atmosphere of a hydrogen sulfide gas at a temperature of 800-1,000 deg.C.
