PURPOSE:To facilitate the formation of the title compound excellent in treatability and operability, hardly discolorable and suitable as an electroconductive treatment agent, antistatic agent or the like, by reacting a specified haloalkylated polymeric compound with an amine. CONSTITUTION:An aldehyde (e.g., paraformaldehyde) to which a chlorine- containing solvent and a Friedel-Crafts catalyst are added, if required, is reacted at 10-50 deg.C by slowly adding a hydrogen halide in an equimolar or slightly excess amount to the aldehyde to obtain a halogenated alcohol (B) as a reaction product. An aromatic nucleuscontaining polymeric compound such as a vinylaromatic polymer of an average MW of 500-3,000,000 is dissolved in a solvent (e.g., CCl4). To this solution, 0.5-4mol, per mol of the aromatic nucleus units, of component B is added and reacted at 30-160 deg.C for 2-20hr in the presence of a catalyst to obtain a haloalkylated polymeric compound (C). Component C is dissolved in a solvent such as ethylene dichloride. To this solution 0.5-1.1 equivalent, per equivalent of halogen in component C, of an amine (D) is added and the reaction mixture is heated to 30-100 deg.C with agitation.
