PURPOSE:To produce a microchannel plate with a datum line by making the electron emission ratio of a specific area of the microchannel plate lower than that of its other area. CONSTITUTION:A datum line pattern consisting of an electron-nontransmitting film made of Au, Al or a similar element is formed on a specific area 12a of a microchannel plate 12 by vapordeposition or a similar method to make the area 12a untransparent to electrons thereby forming a datum line. Alterna tively, a bright datum line image is introduced into an image intensifier tube having a usual microchannel plate 12 to write a datum line image on the plate 12 thereby positively reducing the relative gain of the image area. When an image intensifier tube having a microchannel plate 12 which has a specific area with a reduced relative gainst used to intensify an image, the luminance of the specific area of the intensified image is lower than that of the other area.
