PURPOSE:To provide the titled coiler to increase the accuracy in pursuing the tip position of a strip without causing a slip between a detector and strip by being composed of so as to detect the strip speed especially by a non-contact type plate speed detector. CONSTITUTION:The chase for the tip position of a strip S is performed by the operation of the number (n) of coilings of the strip S on a mandrel 1 with arithmetic unit 10 when the plate speed detection of the strip S is started by a plate speed detector 9. A selection means 13 is then changed over by outputting a command signal from the unit 10 to a changeover device 15 prior to minute time DELTAt when the number (n) of coilings becomes an integer and a wrapper roll 2 is retreated upto the prescribed position from the mandrel 1 side. After the lapse of the prescribed time the means 13 is shifted by outputting a command signal from the unit 10 to the device 15, the signal transmitted from a press force setter 11 is transmitted to a servo valve 4 and the roll 2 is pressed to the strip S with the prescribed force. The error between the actual length of the strip S wound by the mandrel 1 and the operator length of the strip S is reduced in the above operation and the tip position of the strip S can be accurately pursued.
