PURPOSE:To align accurately image pickup patterns on two printed boards to be contrasted by providing a positioning pattern which has orthogonal straight lines and a positioning means. CONSTITUTION:The two printed boards 20 and 22 to be contrasted are positioned and fixed on tables 16 and 18 for fine adjustment. Then positioning patterns of the boards 20 and 22 are picked up by image pickup devices 28 and 30. Then, one of corner parts P1-P4 is picked up on the boards 20 and 22 by the image pickup devices 28 and 30. Output signals of the image pickup devices 28 and 30 are inputted to binary coding circuits 32 and 34 and converted into binary signals, which are inputted to data storage circuits 36 and 40 as binary-coded video signals, so that images are displayed on a monitor television, etc. Then, those images are inputted to a positioning means (driving motor 26, control circuit 44, etc.) and aligned to each other to match the image pickup patterns of the two printed boards 20 and 22, so that a pattern to be inspected is contrasted accurately with a reference pattern.
