PURPOSE:To improve quality of data communication by executing the training from both directions of a calling side and a called side. CONSTITUTION:In a communication equipment A side of a calling side, a MO DEM 5 is connected to a circuit by a response of a communication equipment B side so that a data communication can be executed. First of all, from a called side, information of a MODEM function is outputted at a communication speed 2400BPS, and subsequently, the communication speed of the MODEM 5 is switched to 4800BPS and a training signal is outputted. On the other hand, the calling side switches the communication speed of the MODEM 5 to 4800BPS by the content of the MODEM function of the called side, which have been sent, and checks the training signal which is sent in the next time. If the training is good, the MODEM function of the own station is outputted at a communication speed 2400BPS in the same way as the called side, and subsequently, the communication speed of the MODEM 5 is switched to 4800BPS and a training signal is outputted. In this way, the communication can be executed at an economical speed.
