PURPOSE:To provide the titled ultrafine particle capable of giving a built-up composite film having fine structure and useful as a separation membrane and composed of a single polymer chain obtained by developing a dilute solution of a polymer on the surface of a lower layer liquid having poor affinity to the polymer and evaporating the developing solvent. CONSTITUTION:A dilute solution obtained by dissolving a polymer in a developing solvent is developed by dripping, etc., on the gas-liquid interface of the lower-layer liquid having poor affinity to the polymer, and the developing solvent is evaporated to form the objective ultrafine particles on the surface of the lower layer liquid. The objective composite can be produced by contacting a substrate plate such as glass plate with the gas-liquid interface containing the formed ultrafine particles, thereby transferring the particles of the surface of the substrate. When the polymer has low affinity to water, e.g. polystyrene, water or an aqueous solution is used as the lower layer liquid and when the polymer has high affinity to water, e.g. polymethyl acrylate, the lower layer is preferably mercury, etc.
