PURPOSE:To detect a variation of a liquid level continuously or stepwise by converting the variation of the liquid level into the variation of the distance from a detection window to a reflecting plate. CONSTITUTION:The titled detector is provided with a tank 1, the detection window 5, a freely turnable float 10, a light emitting element 11, and photodetecting elements 12 and 13, etc. At this time, the light emitting element 11 and the photodetecting elements 12 and 13 are arranged in a row perpendicularly and the output signals of the photodetecting elements 12 and 13 are processed with a signal processing part 14. Further, the reflecting plate 15 is fitted eccentrically to a turning fulcrum part of the float 10. Then, when the liquid level is changed from (a) to (b), the distance from the detection window 5 to the reflecting plate 15 is continuously changed. At this time, the photodetecting element 12 at the side near the light emitting element 11 is strongly influenced by a change of the distance and the photodetecting element 13 at the side far from the light emitting element 11 is strongly influenced by a change of an angle. Accordingly, the characteristics of the distance from the detection window 5 to the reflecting plate 15 and the output electric currents of the photodetecting elements 12 and 13 are different. In this way, a liquid contained in the tank can be detected continuously from fullness to emptiness.
