发明名称 LIQUID CRYSTAL OPTICAL ELEMENT
摘要 PURPOSE:To realize high-contrast display characteristics even when a cell is thick by charging liquid crystal which has bistability between a couple of substrates and arranging a polarizer on and under the cell and applying an electric field and generating a bistable orientation state. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 102a and 102b are formed on the substrates 101a and 101b of a cell structure 100, a liquid crystal layer 103 of ferroelectric smetic liquid crystal which has the bistability is charged between the both and polarizers 107 and 108 are arranged on and under the cell to detect optical modulation. In this constitution, the electric field is applied through the electrodes 102a and 102b to allow the liquid crystal layer 103 has transition from the 1st and the 2nd bistable orientation states to the 3rd and the 4th ideal stable orientation states. Consequently even when the cell thickness which is normally about 4 mum is increased, high-contrast display characteristics are obtained.
