PURPOSE:To enable the measurement of distance inexpensively and at a high accuracy, by measuring at an observation point the spiral time, length or angle of an electromagnetic wave flux spiralling generated at a target point to minimize the effect of meteorological conditions along while permitting operation by a single person. CONSTITUTION:A photometer 2 which has light receiving sections 3 and 4 on the base line S at the right angle to a target is placed at an observation point B to measure a luminous flux F from a target point A. When the time at which the luminous flux F passes spirally between the light receiving sections 3 and 4 is represented by (t), the period during which the luminous flux F is received with the light receiving sections 3 and 4 after one cycle thereof again t0, the length of the base line between the light receiving sections 3 and 4 S, the radius of an imaginary circle which the luminous flux F draws by centering the target point A after passing the light receiving sections 3 and 4 (r), the angle between the point A and the light receivers 3 and 4 theta and the height of the imaginary circular arc from the observation point B (h), the distance L to the target A is determined by L t0/2pitS. Though the accuracy of the distance L depends on the accuracy of t, t0 and S, it can be set at a high accuracy as the S is fixed on the photometer and the accuracy of (t) and t0 can be obtained sufficiently with the present-time measuring-device along with easy possibility of temperature correction.
