PURPOSE:To improve the suitability of a sulfur free-cutting steel to machining with an extremely hard tool and to prolong the endurance life of the tool by adding a specified amount of Si or Al to the steel. CONSTITUTION:At least one between 0.10-0.60wt% Si and 0.005-0.060wt% Al is added to a sulfur free-cutting steel contg., by weight, 0.01-0.39% C, 0.60-1.65% Mn, 0.01-0.12% P, 0.13-0.37% S and 0.001-0.02% O, or 0.05-0.35wt% Pb is further added. The suitability of the free-cutting steel to machining with a high-speed steel tool is improved and the endurance life of a cutting tool, such as the high-speed steel tool, is prolonged.
