PURPOSE:To separate selectively 2,6-isomer of dichlorotoluene, by passing a mixture of dichlorotoluene isomers through ZSM-5 type zeolite so that strongly adsorbing components are adsorbed and desorbing the mixture with steam or a mixture of steam and an inert gas. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of dichlorotoluene isomers is brought into contact with an adsorbent, strongly adsorbing components (2,4-, 2,5- and 3,4-isomers) are adsorbed, and nonadsorbing components (2,6- and 2,3-isomers) are selectively discharged. An inert gas is brought into contact with the adsorbent, the nonadsorbing components remaining among the adsorbent are pushed out, steam or a mixed gas of it and the inert gas is brought into contact with the adsorbent so that the strongly adsorbing components are desorbed, and the adsorbent containing water is dried and regenerated. ZSM-5 type zeolite is preferable as the adsorbent. USE:An intermediate for synthesizing agricultural chemicals, drugs, dyes, etc.
