PURPOSE:To provide a method of igniting sludge coal capable of maintaining a stable combustion in a fluidized bed by a method wherein fine clay constituent contained in the sludge coal is removed in advance. CONSTITUTION:Each of the sludge coal with its clay constituent being removed and the sludge coal with its clay constituent not being removed is formed to have a size of 8 phiX8mm, respectively, and ignited in an electric furnace kept at a temperature of 800 deg.C every specified time. As a result of comparison of their rates of combustion, a mere removal of fine clay constituent dispersed in the water causes the time for reaching a rate of combustion of 100% to be reduced to a half of that of not removing of the clay constituent, resulting in showing a substantial effect. A result of comparison between a hardness of the sludge coal during its dry condition and another hardness of ignited ashes at a temperature of 800 deg.C in reference to their crushing strength shows that the sludges removing the fine clay constituents becomes quite weak in its strength. This shows that in case of ignition in the fluidized bed, even if the sludges are fed in the lump form, the lumps reduces into powder as the combustion is proceeded in the furnace and then a mean diameter of the medium does not increase any more.
