PURPOSE:To obtain a high-level charging efficiency at all times, by providing an intake valve lift varying mechanism for varying lift characteristics of an intake valve according to a rotational displacement of a lift control cam, and controlling to drive the mechanism according to a suction pressure and an intake valve closing timing. CONSTITUTION:There is provided a valve lift varying mechanism 28 for controlling a lift amount and a valve closing timing of an intake valve 3 opening and closing an intake port 26. The mechanism 28 includes a lever 4 pivotably mounted through an eccentric collar 6 to a shaft 5, a rocker guide 7 fixed to a free end of the lever 4, a support shaft 8 of a rocker arm 2 inserted into a guide portion 7a of the rocker guide 7 and resiliently supported by a spring 9, and a lift control cam 10 provided on a back side of the free end of the lever 4. The lift control cam 10 is controlledly rotated by an actuator 35 according to a control amount computed by a control circuit 32 which receives outputs from an intake pressure sensor 31, a valve closing timing sensor 33 and a crank angle sensor 34.
