PURPOSE:To control the communication mode in accordance with a recording area of a storage means where a communication destination discriminating code or the like is stored, by providing a control means which controls the communication mode in accordance with the storage area of the storage means. CONSTITUTION:When a user knows that data cannot be transmitted at 9,600bit/ sec frequently because the line to the destination is bad, he registers the destination to '6' of one touch dialing or *60-*69 of abbreviated dialing if he wants to transmit data at 720bit/sec. He registers the destination to '7' of one touch dialing or *70-*79 of abbreviated dialing in case of 4,800bit/sec and registers it to '8' of one touch dialing or *80-*89 of abbreviated dialing in case of 2,400bit/sec and registers it to '9' of one touch dialing or *90-*99 of abbreviated dialing in case of the G2 mode. He waits for about 45sec until a telephone line is connected to the communication destination, but the line is released by time-out if the telephone line is not connected over 45sec. Thus, the communication operation according with the communication destination is performed quickly.
