PURPOSE:To simplify a device, to shorten a process and to form an inexpensive rod lens in a desired shape, by softening ends part of a glass rod and press molding the rod. CONSTITUTION:The tip parts 1a and 1b of the glass rod 1 are made into flat faces and abraded, the parts are fixed by fixation members 4a and 4b of the fixing means 4 and transferred on the rails 5 in the arrow A direction. Then, the glass rod 1 is sent to the space between the opposing burner 6 and only the surface layer parts of the end parts 1a and 1b are heated and softened by the hydrogen flame 7. Then the fixing means 4 is intermittently slid, sent to a position of the mold means 2 heated by a heater, the mold 2 is transferred in the longer direction of the glass rod as shown by the arrows B and C and only the surface layer parts at the end parts 1a and 1b of the glass rod 1 are press molded (e.g., at 90kg/cm<2> for 15sec). Then, after the molding is over, it is cooled to room temperature, to give a rod lens.
