NEW MATERIAL:A carboxylic acid ester shown by the formula I [R1 is H, or methyl; R2 is group shown by the formula II (X and Y are H, methyl, halogen, or lower alkyl) when R1 is H, R2 is methyl when R1 is methyl; R3 is H or methyl; R4 is H, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, or lower alkynyl]. USE:Useful as an insecticide, showing high effect on dipterous insect pests such as Musca domestica Linne, Culex pipiens pallens, etc., lepidopterous insect pests living in the interior of a house such as Tinea pellionella Linne, insect pests of the order Dictyoptera such as Blattella nipponica Asahina, etc., as a steaming or smoking agent. Having low toxicity to men and animals, produced relatively inexpensively, showing excellent effects on insect pests resistant to organic phosphorous insecticide and to carbamate insecticide. PREPARATION:An alcohol shown by the formula III is reacted with a carboxylic acid shown by the formula IV optionally in a solvent in the presence of a reaction auxiliary and a catalyst to give a compound shown by the formula I.
