PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer of a magnetoplumbite type feromagnetic oxide formed as a vertically magnetized film on a substrate by once forming a thin amorphous film layer which does not exhibit magnetism at a low temp. on the substrate then heating only the thin film layer without affecting the substrate. CONSTITUTION:The substrate temp. is kept at <200 deg.C and the thin amorphous film layer expressed by the formula MFe12O19 (wherein M is at least one kind of the element selected from the group consisting of Ba, Pb, Sr and Sc) is provided by a PVD method on the substrate in the stage of producing the magnetic recording medium provided with the magnetic layer consisting of the ferromagnetic oxide expressed by the above-mentioned formula on the substrate. Only the thin film layer is then heated to form the magnetic layer of the ferromagnetic oxide having the good orientation of the crystalline C-face. The magnetic recording medium having the magnetic layer of the magnetoplumbite type ferromagnetic oxide formed as the vertically magnetized film on the substrate which has an optional shape such as sheet or long-sized shape and is selected from a wide range of materials is thus obtd.
