PURPOSE:To obtain character recognition and image information without increasing a memory capacity, etc, by making a threshold value of a binary-coding circuit variable, inputting character recognizing data by lowering the threshold value at the time of a positive direction, and inputting the image information by increasing the threshold value at the time of the negative direction. CONSTITUTION:When a scanner 10 moves in the positive direction, a right scan is executed, and analog serial data is binary-coded by a threshold value VTH1 in a binary-coding circuit 20, and transferred to an external device through an interface 40. In the external device side, data is converted for every 16 bits by an S-P converting circuit 50, and written on a video memory 70. The memory contents of this (0000)H-(FFFF)H addresses are recognized as a character. Next, when the scanner 10 moves in the negative direction, a left scan is executed, the serial data is binary-coded by a threshold value VTH2 in the binary coding circuit 20, and transferred to the external device. In the external device, its data is converted for every 16 bits by the S-P converting circuit 50, and high-order/low-order bits are replaced by a hast/subordinate replacing multiplexer 60, and written on a video memory 70. Said (FFFF)H-(0000)H addresses are brought to image input processing.
