NEW MATERIAL:An optically active liquid crystal compound shown by the formula I (R1 and R2 are 5-15C alkyl and one of R1 and R2 has asymmetric carbon atom in molecular chain). EXAMPLE:2-(4-Benzyloxyphenyl)-4-hydroxy-5-pyrimidinecarboxylic acid ethyl ester. USE:Effective as a component for a ferromagnetic liquid crystal composition useful for producing an electro-optical element utilizing response of ferromagnetic smetic liquid crystal to electric field. Showing a chiral smectic liquid crystal phase and chemical stability, having high electric field response, capable of being blended with various ferromagnetic liquid crystal compounds and used. PREPARATION:For example, a compound shown by the formula II is reacted with an alkyl halide shown by the formula III in a solvent such as dimethylsulfoxide dimethylformamide, etc., the reaction product is hydrolyzed and the prepared compound is reacted with an aliphatic alcohol to give a compound shown by the formula I.
