PURPOSE:To provide needle coke having a highly anisotropic shape and suited for use in manufacturing a molding carbon material having a high degree of impact resistance, which exhibits specified true specific gravity, helium closed pore and pore volume and specified flatness and ellipse ratio at specified particle size. CONSTITUTION:Needle coke having a true specific gravity 2.160 g/cc or less, a helum closed pore of 0.012 cc/g or less and a pore volume of 0.07 cc/g or less in terms of pores having a radius of 10mum as determined by mercury porosimetry. The needle coke has an average flatness of 0.43 or less and an ellipse ratio of 0.35 or less when pulverized into particles having a Tyler mesh particle size of 60-200. The needle coke is obtd., e.g., by the delayed coking method sing a mixture of a hydrogenated coal tar pitch free from a quinoline- insoluble matter with a petroleum material as a starting material.
