PURPOSE:To produce a porous clay derivative which has a large interlaminar clearance and is stable by hydrolyzing metallic alkoxide, peptizing the produced precipitate with an acid to make it a hydrated metallic oxide sol and allowing the sol to react with smectites. CONSTITUTION:Metallic alkoxide is added to water so that the concn. is regulated to about 0.001-1M and the mixture is hydrolyzed at about 5-80 deg.C to produce a white precipitate powder. Still more as the metallic alkoxide, Al(OR)3 and Ti(OR)4 or the like (R is 1-6C hydrocarbon group.) are used. This precipitate is peptized with an acid (hydrochloric acid or the like) of 1/5-4 times mol metallic alkoxide to produce a hydrated metallic oxide sol. The hydrated metallic oxide sol having about 5-100 times cationic exchange capacity of smectites is added to a smectites suspension having about 0.001-5wt% concn. while stirring the mixture and it is allowed to react with each other at room temp. - about 50 deg.C. Thereby the porous clay derivative capable of controlling the size of a interlaminar clearance is obtained.
