A focal point adjustment device is provided with a focal point detection region setting unit (121), a direction determination unit (122), and a control unit (123). The focal point detection region setting unit (121) sets a plurality of focal point detection regions of different sizes. The direction determination unit (122) determines the direction of movement of a focusing lens toward focusing on the basis of changes in contrast accompanying focusing lens movement. The control unit (123) repeatedly assesses whether or not the determination results for direction of movement of the focusing lens obtained for each of the plurality of focal point detection regions are different. The control unit (123) suppresses switching of focal point adjustment operations when it is assessed that the difference in determination results for direction of movement continues for a prescribed number of times or more and otherwise does not suppress the switching. |
