PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, by reacting a methyl (substituted aryl) ketone with phenyldimethylsulfonium methyl sulfate in the presence of an alkali hydroxide to give an epoxypropane and directly bringing the resultant epoxypropane into contact with anhydrous magnesium chloride. CONSTITUTION:A methyl (substituted aryl) ketone expressed by formula I (Ar is formula II, III, etc.), e.g. 4-isobutylacetophenone, is reacted with phenyldimethylsulfonium methyl sulfate expressed by formula IV in the presence of an alkali hydroxide, e.g. NaOH, to give a 2-(substituted aryl)-1,2- epoxypropane, which is, without isolation (particularly the reaction mixture is dried), brought into contact with anhydrous magnesium chloride to afford the aimed compound. EFFECT:The aimed compound is obtained in high purity and yield under mild conditions, e.g. room temperature, with little by-products. USE:An intermediate for 2-(substituted aryl)propionic acids which are anti- inflammatory agents.
