PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a monomer for aromatic polyketones in good yield in a short time, by reacting a 4, 4'- dihaloterephthalophenone or 4,4'-dihaloisophthalophenone with an alkali fluoride. CONSTITUTION:A 4,4'-dihaloterephthalophenone expressed by formula I (X<1> and X<2> are Cl, Br or I) or 4,4'-dihaloisophthalophenone expressed by formula II is reacted with an alkali fluoride, particularly preferably potassium fluoride having <=50mu particle diameter and >=1.0m<2>/g specific surface area to give 4,4'- difluoroterephthalophenone or 4,4'-difluoroisophthalophenone. A polymer obtained therefrom is a crystalline aromatic polyketone having improved heat resistance and mechanical properties.
