A method for the preparation of ethylene glycol and/or a carboxylic acid ester thereof which comprises introducing carbon monoxide, hydrogen, a liquid medium comprising a carboxylic acid, a catalyst containing rhodium as the major metallic component and nitrate ions into a reaction zone and subjecting said reaction zone to a temperature in the range 100-400 DEG C and a pressure of at least 50 bars. |
