PURPOSE:Diphenyl sulfone is nitrated with mixed acid under specific conditions and the crude product is simply purified to give a compound which is used as a synthetic intermediate of monomers of heat-resistant polymers, medicines, agricultural chemicals and dyes, in high yield from inexpensive materials. CONSTITUTION:In the nitration of diphenyl sulfone or 3-nitrodiphenyl sulfone with mixed acid, sulfuric anhydride is added to the reaction system to keep the system free from water and the reaction is carried out at -5-5 deg.C to give 3,3'-dinitrodiphenyl sulfone. The sulfuric anhydride is dissolved in sulfuric acid and the resultant fuming sulfuric acid contains 15-40wt% of the anhydride. The amount of nitric acid or nitrate salt is 1-2mol per mol of 3-nitrodiphenyl sulfone and 2-3.5mol per mol of diphenyl sulfone. The amount of the fuming sulfuric acid is 2.5-20mol per mol of nitric acid on the basis of sulfuric groups.
