PURPOSE:To enhance the rate of machine service times by moving a multi-shaft unit along the X, Y, and Z-axes before a body side, an underbody and a roof are sent to a provisional assembly station, deciding the clamping surface, and thereafter performing clamp through movement of a side frame. CONSTITUTION:A locator 6 is moved along the X, Y, and Z-axes of a multi-shaft changeover unit Rn by program-controlling it according to car type detection signals given by a computer before a body side 1, an underbody 2 and a roof 3 are sent to a body provisional assembly station 5 so as to form the clamping surface for the components 1, 2, and 3. Automatic movement is then made until a side frame 4 of the station 5 mates with the clamping surface, and the components 1, 2 and 3 fed to the station 5 are clamped by said locator 6 into a consolidated structure. This should eliminate drop of the rate of machine service times due to downtime of assembly lines during replacement of transport jig trucks and/or locating jigs.
