PURPOSE:To produce molded germanium grains having no possibility of failure by intimately mixing an adequate. amt. of pulverized powder of a hot meltable binder material having the m.p. lower than the m.p. of germanium powder with said powder and molding the mixture under heating. CONSTITUTION:The pulverized powder of the hot meltable binder material having the m.p. lower than the m.p. (958.5 deg.C) of germanium and having preferably the diameter of a mu unit is intimately mixed with about 200 mesh germanium powder at about 5-50vol% of the germanium powder. Metal such as tin, inorg. material such as glass frit and org. material such as thermoplastic high-polymer, etc. are adequate as the above-mentioned binder material. The intimately mixed raw material is heated to the temp. approximate to the m.p. of the above-mentioned binder material and is compression molded. The germanium is deposited by evaporation on the surface of the molding if necessary. The molded germanium grains are also obtd. by adding the pulverized powder of noble metal such as silver having the m.p. higher than the m.p. of the germanium powder to the germanium powder at about 3-30% of said powder, mixing both powders, and molding the mixture under the pressurization then sintering the molding.
