PURPOSE:To enable accurate measurement of surface hardness of a web roll objects always without variations, by imparting a fixed proper pressing force with a weight keeping desired posture of a hardness meter by the use of a hardness meter posture holding means. CONSTITUTION:A hardness meter 15 is lowered with a hardness meter posture holding means 24 with a detection terminal 17 downward vertically to make a web roll object 11 abut on the top 14 of the web roll object 11. As the means 24 further lowers by l as, the hardness meter 15 is released from the engagement with a stopper 25 and a slider 25 moves relative to a guide 26 to bring the hardness meter 15 onto the top 14. Here, a fixed weight is added to the hardness meter 15 with a weight 22. This meets two desirable requirements - regular posture and desired pressing force thereby assuring a correct measured value of the surface hardness with a high reproducibility.
