PURPOSE:To separate a saturated monocyclic hydrocarbon or an unsaturated monocylic hydrocarbon from a mixture containing two or more of the saturated monocyclic hydrocarbon, the unsaturated hydrocarbon and an aromatic monocyclic hydrocarbon by extractive distillation efficiently, by using a phthalic acid diester as an extraction solvent. CONSTITUTION:In separating (A) a saturated monocyclic hydrocarbon or (B) an unsaturated hydrocarbon from a mixture containing at least two of the component A, the component B and (C) an aromatic monocyclic hydrocarbon by extractive distillation, a phthalic acid diester such as dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate, di-isobutyl phthalate, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate and/or dioctyl phthalate, especially dimethyl phthalate, is used as an extraction solvent and separation of the mixture, especially separation of the component A from B is efficiently carried out by the use of the solvent having improved selectivity and solubility.
