PURPOSE:To provide an antifouling paint compsn. having low toxicity and excellent abrasion resistance which comprises a copolymer of a water-soluble unsatd. monomer having a carboxyl group with a water-insoluble unsatd. monomer. CONSTITUTION:3-80wt% carboxyl-contg. water-soluble unsatd. monomer of formula I or II [wherein R1 is H or a lower alkyl; R2 is H or a (carboxy) lower alkyl; and n is an integer of 2-6] is copolymerized with 20-97wt% water-insoluble unsatd. monomer such as methyl methacrylate in a water- miscible org. solvent such as methyl alcohol in the presence of a radical polymn. catalyst such as an azo compd. at 0-180 deg.C for 1-20hr to obtain a copolymer having a number average MW of 3,000-200,000 and a glass transition temp. of -10-200 deg.C. The carboxyl group of the copolymer is neutralized by the addition of 1-100 equivalents of alkali compd. such as NaOH, and CuO, a filler, a plasticizer, etc., may be added thereto, if necessary.
