PURPOSE:To cause no change with time and to enable the manufacture of a highly spinnable, high performance pitch-base carbon fiber after storage or conveying to a subsequent process, by keeping a crude pitch for carbon fiber under a specified inert gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A crude pitch for carbon fiber is stored either in a molten state in the absence of any solvent or as mixture thereof with a solvent, during which it is kept under an inert gas atmosphere having an oxygen concentration of 1,000ppm or less, preferably 500ppm or less, usually at a temperature of 60 deg.C or higher, prefereably 100-300 deg.C. When the crude pitch is to be stored in a molten state in the absence of any solvent, the temperature is preferably 100 deg.C or higher, especially 150-300 deg.C. The amount of water contained in the aforementioned inert gas is preferably 500ppm or less. As the inert gas, for example, nitrogen or argon is preferably used.
