NEW MATERIAL:3,5-Bis(1'-tolyl-1'methylethyl) salicylic acid or a salt thereof. USE:Useful as an antimicrobial agent, having improved deodorant effect and stable in products, e.g. soap, shampoo, etc., without showing photoallergy to the skin. When blending with toiletry products, 0.01-5pts.wt. compound is preferably added. The compound is capable of exhibiting antimicrobial action on dermal idigenous Gram-positive bacteria, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylo coccus albus or Bacillus subtilis, etc. PREPARATION:2,4-Bis(1'-tolyl-1'-methylethyl)phenol obtained from phenol by addition reaction of phenol with isopropenyltoluene is carboxylated to afford the aimed novel compound.
