PURPOSE:To enable automated judgement about cutting and enhance the yield from rolling process by judging if there is crop cut and how long the cut length is, on the basis of the cutting limit criteria and the shape on the rolling mill output side predicted through measurement of the crop shape before cutting. CONSTITUTION:Crop shape of a coarse rolled work at its top and bottom is sensed by a crop shape sensing device 1, and the dimension is sent to a process calculator 6, which predicts how the crop shape changes on the output side of a finish rolling mill 3 with the aid of a specific equation. Appropriate signal is sent to a crop shear control device 4 upon determining the cut length for restraining within limit values and if there is a cut on the basis of the criteria given by the limitation reference classified by destinations from the fish-tail length on the stand output side obtained. The crop at the bottom part is also judged on the same basis. Cutting control in this manner may present a cutting example in which there are residual fish-tails, that does not however mean any problem as the values lie within the criteria, but contributes to approaching a favorable objective from the stand-point of enhancing the yield.
