PURPOSE:To accurately and quickly perform discriminating by lighting a tire surface from the vertical and the skew directions, and discriminating the tire from a picture signal by means of taking and treating letters, etc. cut on the tire surface in the vertical direction. CONSTITUTION:Letters, etc. cut on a tire 11 are lighted by a light source 16 from the vertical direction and another light source 17 from the skew direction. And the pictures are taken in a telecamera 14 to be sent in a signal processing device 19 and treated. The signal processing device 19 performs fine line processing and discriminates them after collating them with standard symbol patterns, after input picture signals are processed in binary. According to the result a kind of tire is discriminated and shown as well as output in an output device 22. The formation can quickly and accurately perform tire discriminating.
