PURPOSE:To improve the resolution by using one halftone processing system as the sub matrix processing system and switching the processing system in the unit of sub matrix region. CONSTITUTION:The gradation processing unit is provided with two kinds of gradation processing systems, the 1st processing system has a 2X2 averaging circuit 149 and a sub matrix processing system 153, and the 2nd processing system is equipped with an edge extraction circuit 151, a binary-coding circuit 164, a dither processing circuit 156 and a logical gate 165. Either processing system output is outputted selectively automatically depending whether an input data includes edge information or not.
