PURPOSE:To easily detect the cause of a fault and to simplify the maintenance of the air conditioner by determining that the cause of a fault is on the indoor side or the outdoor side by carrying out an independent air delivery operation depending upon whether or not an indoor fan is operating upon occurrence of the extraordinary stoppage of the operation. CONSTITUTION:The separate type air conditioner is provided with extraordinary stop determining means 4 for determining an extraordinary operation shutdown, operation determining means 5 for determining the air conditioning operation or the air delivery operation, extraordinary stop indicating means 6, and fan drive instructing means 7 for giving the operational instruction to an indoor fan 12 while outputting a drive extraordinary stop signal, the independent air delivery operation is carried out. As a result, when the indoor fan 12 is operated, an indoor side control circuit 1 interposing therein control means 4, 5, 6 and 7 functions normally, and it is possible to make judgement that causes of abnormal operation shutdown are other than in an indoor control circuit 1. If the indoor fan is not operated, it is determined that the indoor control circuit 7 is faulty.
