PURPOSE:To inspect gap width with high accuracy and to automate the inspection by performing measurement and inspection based upon the brightness difference in brightness level crossing a gap boundary among pieces of image information on the gap between a magnet sleeve and a control plate. CONSTITUTION:The periphery of the gap part 4 between the magnet sleeve 2 and control plate 3 is irradiated slantingly by a light source 7 in a developing tank cartridge 1 and its reflected image is formed on the image pickup surface of an ITV camera 6. Then, a pattern detection signal outputted by the camera 6 is stored in an image memory 9 through an A/D conversion part 8. The stored position relation is so determined that areas 11, 12, and 13 are images of the sleeve 2, control plate 3, and gap part 4 respectively. Then there are large brightness differences at the boundaries between the areas 11 and 13, and 13 and 12, which is utilized to inspect the gap width automatically.
