PURPOSE:An active oxygen removing agent, containing 3-hydroxyquinurenine, salt, ester or acylated material thereof as an active ingredient, useful for preventing and treating various diseases caused by active oxygen and having low toxicity. CONSTITUTION:An active oxygen removing agent, containing 3- hydroxyquinurenine, a salt, ester or acylated material thereof as an active ingredient. It has been elicited that the active oxygen is closely related to peroxidation, aging, inflammation, carcinogenesis, etc., of a cell membrane lipid and it is recognized that 3-hydroxyquinurenine which is one kind of in vivo metabolites has active oxygen removing action as a substance having the above-mentioned action. The toxicity thereof is very low. There are D- isomer, L-isomer and racemic modification of 3-hydroxyquinurenine and all of them are usable as an active ingredient of the active oxygen removing agent. The dose thereof is normally 1-3,000mg/day for human adults.
