PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber core which is small in diameter and light in weight, is flexible and is adequate for high-density packaging by interposing a buffer layer embedded with tensile fibers between an optical fiber strand and thermoplastic resin covering. CONSTITUTION:This optical fiber is constituted by covering the outside periphery of the optical fiber strand 1 applied with a primary coating 12 consisting of silicone, etc. on the outside periphery of an optical fiber 11 with the rubber- like buffer layer 5 consisting of polyurethane or silicone, etc. embedded with the tensile fibers 3 consisting of arom. polyamide fibers, etc., and covering the outside periphery thereof with the thermoplastic resin covering 6 consisting of 'Teflon(R)' or nylon, etc. The mass production thereof is executed by first subjecting the optical fiber 11 spun from a preform 7 while heating the same with a heater 8 to primary coating with a die 9. The rubber-like buffer layer 5 is then formed while the polyurethane, silicone, etc. are supplied together with the tensile fibers 3 to a die 10 and further the optical fiber core covered with the thermoplastic resin coating 6 with a die 20 is taken up on a drum 21, by which the production is completed.
