PURPOSE:To appropriately select any one of plural communication functions according to the function that an opposite communication party has and to run a device efficiently by providing a means deciding the communication function that the opposite party has and a means for selecting the function. CONSTITUTION:In terms of an image communication equipment composed of plural image information transmission means A1-An, the decision means B and the selection means C, the means B decides the communication function that the opposite party has, and the means C selects any one of the means A1-An based on the output of the means B and connects it to a communication line. At this time, the means B identifies the declaration of a transmission mode available from the opposite communication party, and the means C can connect the means with the lower function among the means A1-An applicable to the transmission mode that the opposite communication party has to the communication line. Thus the optimum function can be selected among plural image communication functions, and the possibility that a busy state will occur can be reduced. Accordingly communications is made through the use of the image communication equipment suitable to the ability of the opposite communication party, whereby an overall system can be efficiently worked.
